Method
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Combine all dry ingredients, using 1/4 cup of the brown sugar and reserving the remaining amount.
- Whisk together 1 tablespoon milk, 2 tablespoons melted butter, applesauce, and egg. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until combined.
- Transfer the batter to a gallon-sized plastic bag, cut off one corner, and pipe the batter into a greased mini-donut pan, filling each cavity about halfway.
Baking
- Bake the mini donuts for about 7 minutes. Remove them from the oven and take each donut out of the pan.
Frosting
- Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter with 1/4 cup brown sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the chocolate chips until melted.
- Bring the mixture to a boil and continue boiling for about 2 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon milk and return the mixture to a boil.
- Add the powdered sugar, using the final tablespoon of milk as needed to thin the frosting. Keep the frosting over low heat and dip each mini donut into the glaze.
- Add any desired sprinkles or toppings immediately after dipping while the glaze is still fresh.
Notes
Fill the mini donut pan cavities about halfway to help maintain the intended small donut shape.
